Many years ago I was a Drainer Sewer man on the local councils around Pendle.
I have repaired and dug out hundreds of tippler toilets in my time.
The toilet was nearly always in the back yard next to the ash pit.
The tippler toilet used water from the sink to wash away your human waste.
There was a tippler box.
On top of the tippler box was a dish brick.
In the box was the tippler that filled with waste water.
And when it was full it empted itself down a 4 inch drainpipe.
The tippler was on two brass injures.
The injures use to get worn out and have to be replaced every few years.
The dirty waste water went down the 4 inch pipe to the twirler
and then into a 6 inch trap at the bottom of the long drop
and then the waist was washed away down a 6inch pipe to the main sewer.
Above the twirler were the pans 18 inch sewer pipes.
And on top of the pans was the old wood seat
or even a stone seat very cold to the Backside in winter.
And on the wall was old news paper cut into small
Squares to wipe your bum on.
Over the years we have had to rescue many things from down the old long drops.
Catâs and even dogs and small children have tried to fall down them.
People would lose the glassâs and there false teeth too.
But after a wash under the tap the teeth was has good has new and read for use again.
